According to an 86 years old gentleman who lived
in the village, the old inhabitants of Tolun's
Cappadocia Lodge were rich people. "Because this was
a place where the water was close and easy to
get" he said. In fact the Kepez type of gray
stones used in some of the relatively newer
sections, such as some of the arched rooms is a
proof that the inhabitants were wealthy. Kepez
Stone is a solid gray stone generally found in the hills
of Kavak village, about 15 kms from Uchisar. The
mining of the stone is prohibited in that area
as it is part of the Cappadocia world heritage
site and mining might change the landscape in
time. The stone is considered to be a solid and
waterproof one. It is often used in fountain
basins, staircases, fireplaces or rain drainage
channels called "חצrten".
We found some of these rarely available stones in
some remote area. We cut them from the mountain
by traditional ways and used them for building the
main staircase. The fountain in the courtyard is
also made of Kepez stones. We transformed one of
the stables in the basement floor into a rock
bedroom. It's all carved out from the rock and
will be ready to host it's guests soon. We are
putting a lot of effort there as we really want
our guests feel the
ambience.
